The Film & Research
Crossing Bridges (2016) is a reflective documentary about my journey to find acceptance as a queer Asian man and immigrant to Canada.
The reflective paper by the director of Crossing Bridges (2016) explores the challenges, discomfort, and insecurities, which arose from being the subject of the documentary. At the same time, the director examines the unique strategies used in creating a narrative because of the subjective nature of the project. This paper and project investigate the use of documentary processes for a queer Asian man to embrace his sexuality, identity, and culture. This paper proposes autobiographical documentary as a radical pedagogy for the self-understanding of individuals from other marginalized communities.
The Project
Being reflexive means, “having the courage to be fluid, in a world relentlessly searching for stability and certainty” (Adams and Jones 114).
Crossing Bridges project is created as a response to the increasing tension in the ways in which we talk about race, culture and LGBTQ issues in the West and around the world. The vision of this project is to engage people in dialog and critical thinking about these issues through public outreach and workshops. By creating a platform for safe and inclusive conversation, we can help individuals from the marginalized communities to reflect on the construction of their identities. It makes them re-visit, question and analyze their journey as minorities. At the same time, it will help others to better understand the struggles that these individuals face. Furthermore, the goal is to create more video and graphic contents that can are accessible to share online.
